A company that hires consultants basically says:

  • We hired good people but, they’re not good enough for this new mandate.
  • Our people are not objective enough for this new mandate or, perhaps, we want to fire everyone…
  • We have money to spend but don’t want to spend it on employee raises and salaries.
  • Our employees could have made a lot more if they hadn’t decided to be permanent employees here…

Well… perhaps they don’t and it’s only what some people imagine.

But, the reality is that, as consultants you have to be ready to be disliked by some. Your role and status are different; they’re rarely explained to the people that are going to be working with you. Fear and jealousy are normal reactions in the face of doubt; you have to learn to raise above that.
